In April, consumer prices were 4.2 percent higher than a year earlier. Compared to March, prices rose by an average of 0.2 percent, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Friday.
Compared to April last year, food prices rose by 5.4%, including eggs by 26.9%, flour by 23.7%, cooking oil by 23.4%, chocolate and cocoa by 20.0%, coffee by 19.8%, fruit and vegetable juices by 14.5%, buffet items by 9.8%, non-alcoholic soft drinks by 8.2%, milk 7.5%, and bread 6.8%. Within this product group, the price of margarine fell by 29.2%, dairy products by 7.5%, and salami and sausage by 6.4%.
The KSH highlighted that
services became 7.0% more expensive, including postal services by 11.3%, rent by 11.0%, vehicle repair and maintenance by 10.5%, personal care services by 10.1%, home repair and maintenance by 9.8%, and holiday services by 8.4%.
The price of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products rose by 6.3%. Household energy costs rose by 3.5% on average, including an 8.7% increase in bottled gas and a 7.2% increase in piped gas. According to the report, the price of durable consumer goods rose by 2.0%, with jewelry up 22.0%, new passenger cars up 6.1%, and furniture up 3.7%, while used passenger cars were 1.9% cheaper. The price of vehicle fuels fell by 7.1%, while medicines and medical products rose by 4.9%.
In one month, consumer prices rose by an average of 0.2% compared to March, while food prices fell by 1.3%.
Within this, margarine fell by 23.6%, dairy products by 13.4%, flour by 12.5%, butter by 8.7%, milk by 8.6%, cooking oil by 6.1%, salami and sausage by 5.9%, cheese by 5.4%, poultry by 5.0%, sugar by 4.3%, and pork by 4.1%. Within the food product group, chocolate and cocoa price rose by 3.3%, buffet goods by 1.9%, non-alcoholic soft drinks and rice by 1.4%, dry pasta by 1.3%, pastries by 0.9% and bread by 0.7%.
Compared to March data, the largest increase was in household energy, which rose by 3.8%, with piped gas up 8.3% and bottled gas down 1.2%.
Moreover, the price of clothing rose by 2.1% on average, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products by 1.3% over the month, with tobacco products rising by 2.4%. Services rose by 0.8%, with domestic holidays up 4.7%, foreign holidays 1.4% and vehicle repair and maintenance 1.0%. The price of vehicle fuels fell by 1.4%, while medicines and medical products rose by 3.1%, according to the Central Statistical Office.
